WE LIVE SANDSTONE - BE PART OF IT!

When precise craftsmanship meets high-quality Elbe sandstone, extraordinary things are created. And when this unique symbiosis finds its way to a new project, it is us, the Sächsische SANDSTEINWERKE, in connection with our customers.

The name Sächsische SANDSTEINWERKE GmbH stands for tradition, efficiency and first-class quality. As a medium-sized family business with experience from decades of successful activity, we are your specialist for all questions concerning Elbsandstein, but also for other natural stones.

A STONE GAINS SIGNIFICANCE

Where millions of years ago there was nothing but water, high and massive layers were piled up over time by sedimentary deposits. These accumulations received their world-famous shape from the unruly forces of nature. Influences such as rain, wind and temperature gave the bizarre rock formations their unmistakable character. Formed in the Cretaceous period and crossed by the Elbe River, the rocks there rise idyllically and unmistakably from the forests of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Saxon Switzerland with its special rock was born.

FROM A SOUGHT-AFTER MATERIAL TO A SOUGHT-AFTER BUILDING MATERIAL

From Saxony to the world. The noble stone began to arouse enthusiasm among master builders hundreds of years ago. Over time, the Elbe sandstone became increasingly popular building material for churches, castles and palaces and still enjoys great popularity all over the world.

During the Baroque period, the most impressive buildings and works of art were created from Elbe sandstone.
Under renowned architects such as Pöppelmann, Chiaveri and Bähr, monuments of architecture steeped in history rose up. Among the numerous works, the Dresden Zwinger, the Hofkirche on the banks of the Elbe in the state capital and, last but not least, the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) rank as prominent references.
Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff brought the sunny color facets of the sandstone to life with the Sanssouci Palace in the picturesque vineyard terraces of Potsdam, based on sketches by King Frederick II. Berlin's City Palace also dressed itself in the warm hues of the coveted stone from Saxon Switzerland after its reconstruction by Andreas Schlüter and Eosander von Göthe. To this day, we admire the dazzling buildings and sculptures throughout Europe and beyond its borders.

Under the names "wood grinder" and "millstone" at the time, the sandstone was also shipped to Russia, Scandinavia and even as far as Cuba at the beginning of the 19th century for technical applications in paper and cardboard production.

FROM POST-WAR RUINS TO SUCCESS STORY

A TIME TRAVEL

In the second half of the 19th century, about 400 quarries were operated in the region. The Fleck und Ilmert KG company in Pirna was one of the few to defy the subsequent shocks of two world wars and the world economic crisis and was initially partially nationalized after 1945. In 1972, the shareholder families were completely expropriated and the company was transferred to the "VEB Elbenaturstein".

After the unification of Germany, the company was reprivatized and the following generations of the company founders took over the responsibility again, thus contributing to the continuation of the success story. Since then, the company has again been operating independently under its current name - "Sächsische SANDSTEINWERKE GmbH".

The once scattered quarries and production facilities, characterized by the hardest physical labor, have become a modern and efficient company with its headquarters at the historic site of the company's founding in Pirna-Rottwerndorf. We cultivate the traditional stonemasonry and sculpture craft just as we rely on the most modern CNC-controlled machines for large-scale production.

The archaeological reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche with its distinctive and self-supporting sandstone dome has become synonymous with the company and the art of Saxon stonemasonry.

A CoMpANy wITH TRADITION AND FuTuRE

Over several generations, we have been active as a medium-sized family business on the national and increasingly also on the international natural stone market. The name Sächsische SANDSTEINWERKE GmbH stands for outstanding performance and first-class quality. We focus above all on project-related custom-made products "Made in Germany" according to individual customer requirements - we make your world more beautiful.

Our extensive range of services includes the quarrying and processing of COTTAER, REINHARDTSDORFER and POSTAER SANDSTONE from our 6 quarries, professional customer advice, the often necessary on-site measurement, planning and stone-technical implementation, the production of facade slabs, semi-finished and finished products through to complete solutions from a single source including restoration work. Standard assortments such as floor slabs, copings, masonry and paving stones for gardening and landscaping round off the product range.

However, the main focus of our activity is the production of solid stone network pieces and sculptural elements made of Elbsandstein. Thus, the company developed into the market leader in this segment.

Here we can refer to the most important references such as the Dresden Frauenkirche, the Schloss-Arkaden Braunschweig, the Landtag in Brandenburg (Potsdam City Palace) and the imposing Eosander Portal with its dome enthroned above it in the Berlin Palace.

Commitment and dedication - today as in the past: As a training company, Sächsische SANDSTEINWERKE assumes responsibility for the continued existence of the historic stonemasonry and sculpture trade as well as for the careful quarrying and sustainable processing of Elbe sandstone.

NATURAL STONE IS SUSTAINABLE

In terms of sustainability, especially domestic natural stone can score points over other natural stones and building materials.

Natural stone has clear ecological and energy advantages over the entire life cycle of buildings. Domestic stones perform particularly well here, as they do not have to be transported over long distances to their destination and therefore comparatively little energy has to be used for transport.

In addition, natural stones are recyclable, re-supplyable, they age gracefully, are inexpensive and economical. They convey value as well as urbanity and fit perfectly with already installed materials.

In this context, we draw attention to the following publications, which are guidelines for us.
