For us, the provision of material and surface samples is a matter of course. The often necessary measurement on site is just as much a part of this as a 2- or 3-dimensional planning according to your specifications. Our stone technicians then prepare the production documents and, if required, the setting and installation plans with all the detailed information, including the static proof and the anchoring.
In addition to traditional craftsmanship, we also work with digitally controlled machines. We also scan ornaments and sculptures, process them into 3D visualizations and use them to develop machining programs for our CNC-controlled 5-axis machines. Quantity surveys, the preparation of specifications and damage mapping in the field of monument preservation round off our service profile.
We, the Sächsische SANDSTEINWERKE GmbH, extract high-quality Elbsandstone in six of our own quarries. COTTAER, REINHARDTSDORFER and POSTAER SANDSTEIN are quarried in their different varieties using the company's own technology and experienced personnel. The different technical and optical properties of these sandstone types offer a wide selection to find the right sandstone for your project.
We rely on domestic materials from first-class deposits with high availability, long historical tradition and shortest procurement routes. The raw blocks are dimensionally and gently extracted from the solid. A careful and object-related material selection guarantees our customers a first-class material quality.
In terms of sustainability and due to its outstanding eco-balance, domestic natural stone in particular can score points over other natural stones and building materials. Natural stone is available in sufficient quantities, can be delivered later and is recyclable. Our Elbe sandstone does not have to be manufactured in a complex process, nor does it produce polluted waste during processing. It should also be emphasized that the energy consumption for the production of our natural stone elements is low compared to other building materials.
Sandstone matches already built materials, ages gracefully and conveys value as well as urbanity.
One focus of our activities is the mechanical processing of the extracted sandstone. In our production plant "Kleine Mühle" in Pirna, the raw blocks are sawn into raw slabs of different thicknesses in saw gates, further processed if required and monitored and tested according to the strictest quality standards. In this way, we offer our customers everything from a single source and "Made in Germany", from the semi-finished product to the finished end product.
For each production step of natural stone processing, we have the appropriate machinery from saw gates to the most modern CNC-controlled milling robots. This mechanical equipment enables a very high prefabrication burr and thus also ensures first-class quality. In doing so, we fulfill all technically possible requirements in terms of size, dimensions, profiling and surface exactly according to your specifications. In this way, we have been able to contribute to the success of the reconstruction of major projects such as the Frauenkirche in Dresden and the castles in Braunschweig, Potsdam and Berlin.
The basis for programming the latest CNC-controlled 5-axis machines can be CAD designs, models made in clay or plaster or according to historical models, plaster casts or provided originals, which we scan in three dimensions. Alternatively, digitally provided data from third parties can be taken over and processed.
The heart of our activity is traditional stonemasonry and stone sculpture. Today, it is the task of our stonemasons to create workpieces of the highest craftsmanship for all style epochs according to stone-technical measurements and specified production documents. They achieve this with craftsmanship, artistic sensitivity and technical perfection. The efficiency and flexibility of the company is represented in particular by up to 20 stonemasons and stone sculptors, including our apprentices, who work on the stone every day.
The beginnings of Saxon sculpture go back to the 12th century and experienced their highest flowering especially in the Baroque period. Due to their many years of experience in working with natural stone, our stone sculptors possess the technical skills to copy centuries-old unique pieces by famous artists in stone, true to detail. This requires a great deal of empathy, especially in the case of monument preservation tasks - in addition to a high degree of technical skill - in order to revive the original expression of the Old Masters.
As references of the stonemasonry and stone sculpture art, several historic buildings in Dresden, such as the Residenzschloss, the Semper Opera House and the Dresden Zwinger, can be named. Further references extend along the Elbe in Meissen, Torgau, Magdeburg and Hamburg to the royal houses in Denmark and Norway. However, the greatest challenges in natural stone processing for the stonemasons and sculptors of Sächsische SANDSTEINWERKE were the major projects for the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche in Dresden and the castles in Braunschweig, Potsdam and Berlin. Today, Saxon stonemasonry is increasingly appreciated throughout Europe and in Russia as far as the Urals.
All materials age and change over time. These changes depend on the material properties as well as on the type and intensity of external factors. This process is referred to as weathering.
The task of restoration is to identify and analyze the cause of weathering or its damage patterns. Subsequently, appropriately coordinated restoration measures are determined. When implementing these measures, compliance with the goals of monument preservation and conservation is the top priority!
